Twenty-Nine

Wolfe

As predicted, Nicole had ditched me when it came to being real.

I’d offered to take her on a date, for fucks sake, and what did she do?

My stomach sank.

Everyone was fucking fake.

I couldn’t depend on anyone.

Her dad had looked at me like I was shit on his shoe. He hated me because my dad married his ex-wife—not my fucking problem.

But Nicole?

What a waste of my fucking time.

I drove aimlessly, my anger spiraling out of control as each mile ticked away on the dash. My dad was tired of me, my mom cared more for drugs than me, and now Nicole was embarrassed to be with me.

Well, fuck her.

I drove until the sky darkened, pulling over by a store with the view to getting blind drunk. It was either that, or I hurt someone—and I didn’t need to get arrested today.

Imagine everyone’s reaction to that.

Disappointment.

Disgust.

Embarrassment.

I didn’t care, but a small, Nicole-shaped part of me did.

Slamming the car door behind me, I strode into the store with a taste for tequila. I’d drink until I couldn’t see and then sleep in the car.

This must be what Mom feels like.

I stopped, closing my eyes.

No. Mom is an addict. You’re not an alcoholic. You’re not addicted.

Still.

Casting a glance around me, I realized I was in the poor part of town.

A kid watched me from the house across the road, his eyes wide. His skin was dirty; his t-shirt faded beyond belief. He must’ve been ten or eleven years old.

“Nice car,” the kid yelled, nodding at my car.

“Thanks.” I held his gaze. “I worked hard for it.”

Have ambition, kid. Don’t be like me.

The kid gaped at me.

“Are you famous?”

Infamous, more like.

“Nah. I work hard.”

“My mom works. She works hard, and she doesn’t have a car.” The kid frowned. “Maybe she needs to work harder, huh?”

My heart broke for the little guy.

“Maybe when you’re older, you can buy her one with all your money,” I suggested, deciding against the store.

“You got a wife?”

I snorted.

“No, buddy. No wife.”

I would, one day, if she would admit how she fucking felt for me to the world.

“Oh.” The kid looked disappointed. “Do you have a dog?”

I sighed, feeling decidedly worse with each question.

“I’ve got nothing,” I admitted, pulling my door open.

“But you’ve got a nice car.”

I nodded.

“Yeah. See you around, kid.”

I slid into the seat, leaning back against the seat.

What had Nicole’s dad said to me?

“Don’t come near my daughter again, or I’ll make sure you rot in jail.”

Why was Nicole so fucking scared of everyone knowing she was mine?

Not everyone. Her family. My family.

I turned the car around, speeding away from the kid with wide eyes.

“Fuck this.”

I smiled, knowing exactly what I needed to do.
